Cottagecore style is cozy. It is not curated from generic big box stores. It is collected and cohesive but not matched. It’s warm, not trendy. Let’s face it. Trendy can be fun BUT it doesn’t last. I choose to go more timeless in my own decorating. I don’t have the time or budget to keep redoing my home from top to bottom. I always have some sort of project to do around the house, but change my whole house at once? Nope.

Cottage homes often feature gentle, calming colors. Think creams and warm whites, soft pastels, muted florals and weathered neutrals.
These colors help create a peaceful, airy feeling — even in smaller spaces. I also love adding a few pops of red here and there.
Vintage & Timeworn Pieces
This is where cottagecore decorating truly shines. Chipped paint, worn wood, and imperfect finishes aren’t flaws — they’re character. Thrifted furniture, flea market finds, and family heirlooms fit beautifully into a cottage home. While I am not totally against big box stores, I shop there too, to create a truly cozy cottagecore style home you have to shop elsewhere too. Add a selection of vintage and handmade pieces. Shop at thrift stores, craft shows and flea markets. You will fall in love with the thrill of the hunt! The majority of my home is filled with thrifted and handmade pieces. My home says “The Hogan Family lives here”. Not “We Shop At Wayfair and Walmart.” Although I shop there too when I am looking for something I can’t find while out hunting. You will find real wood furniture pieces in thrift stores and antique shops. Not the pressboard stuff you see everywhere today. I have ONE piece I bought at Wayfair and I hate it. It is real wood but I paid a lot of money for it compared to my other pieces and it is too small for the space. I will choose vintage over new any day of the week.
If it looks like it’s been loved for years, it belongs in a cottage style home..

Cottage Style vs. Farmhouse — What’s the Difference?
People often confuse cottage and farmhouse styles but they have different personalities.
Farmhouse tends to be simpler and cleaner than cottage style. More structured and neutral-heavy. Think clean lines as opposed to the more ornate, curved, feminine lines of cottagecore style.
And while Farmhouse Style is a cousin to cottage style, it is a trend. One of which seems to be fading some. Cottage style may change or evolve over the years but it isn’t going away anytime soon. I have a few cottage style decorating books that were published in the 1990’s. I was reading through a few of them recently and found many of the aspects in the photos to still be relevant today. You see? Timeless is key here!
Cottagecore Style is softer and more romantic than Farmhouse style. It is more layered, collected and full of personal touches.

Cottage style grows naturally over time — just like a home should. I am about 32 years in at this moment in time. As a decor junkie, my home does evolve constantly but my overall style and desire for coziness has remained strong.
