A Quick and Easy Kitchen Cabinet Update

Happy Wednesday Everyone,

As I sit here watching the weather channel, waiting for Hurricane Irene to make an appearance on Saturday here in NC, I thought I’d take a few minutes to share one of my latest projects with my blog buddies.

My kitchen cabinets were getting kind of drab, tired and worn out looking. They kept nagging me for a facelift. After mulling it over for weeks I decided to jump in and give them a new look. But how? Hmmmm. Tiny Budget. Tiny Time Frame. What to do? Paint of course!

Here is a picture of my kitchen before…..

I started out by giving my cabinets a good scrubbing and light sanding.

I gave them a couple of coats of Olympic Paint’s Turning Taupe in a satin finish. The changes at this stage are actually pretty subtle. The paint color was very similar to the color of the wood grain BUT they now have a cleaner look.

Now for the fun part. I mixed a color wash with some dark brown paint and water and applied it to the door fronts accentuating the corners and then wiping the excess off.

And voila! Instant character! I finished them off with a few coats of paste wax.

To kick it up a notch I wanted to add some new hardware. What country cottage inspired kitchen would be complete without Bin Pulls? After seeing what was available at Lowe’s (and their prices!) I started searching online. I found a company on Ebay that had flat black shaker style bin pulls for $1.49 each. They also had matching knobs for the doors for $1.25 each. Not too shabby! Being that I purchased them online and could not hold them in my hands I was a little nervous about the quality of the hardware. I was pleasantly surprised when I get them in the mail. They are gorgeous! Nice weight to them, great color, great quality. I love them! Total cost for 8 bin pulls and 13 knobs? Around $40 with shipping!
