A Creative Decorating Tip Just For You: Give Grandma’s Old Sofa A New Updated Look
If you ever find yourself with an old, outdated sofa and buying new just isn’t an option there are a couple of easy ways you can update an old sofa that won’t cost a fortune. New furniture can be expensive if you are just starting out in a new home. You may receive many hand me downs from friends and relatives. You may also find yourself scouting out local thrift shops for needed items and that’s ok! A second hand sofa can easily be transformed into a comfy and attractive place to curl up for a night of binge watching.
TIP: It is a good idea to have any upholstered piece of used furniture professionally cleaned or steam cleaned before using it. You don’t want to bring in any cooties that may have come along for the ride.
Perhaps you have had your sofa for a looong time and it has seen better days but it is just not in the budget to buy a new one. These tips will help you as well.
Cover It Up
Slipcovers like this Surefit Amelie Slipcover from Wayfair is a quick and easy way to update an old, worn out sofa that has seen better days. Slipcovers widely range in pricing, fit and quality but are all budget friendly compared to splurging for a new sofa. Perfect for Grandma’s well meaning hand-me-down sofa, a slipcover can customize the look of a room and compliment your existing decor. Amazon has a huge selection of Slipcovers you can shop for here.
Simply Update An Old Sofa With New Pillows
If your budget is really small or you just don’t want to invest in a slipcover, you can update an old sofa by adding new pillows in fresh, trendy fabrics. Colorful pillows and a cozy throw will stand out, making the dated look of the sofa fall into the background.

Update An Old Sofa With Paint
If you are brave enough you may want to try and update your old sofa by painting it like Heidi from Happiness Is Homemade did in the photo below. You can see the entire transformation and learn how she did it on her blog.
I have never attempted to paint a chair or sofa but there are many DIY bloggers out there doing it every day. I often wonder if the paint is stiff and scratchy once it dries. I can’t imagine that being very comfortable but I think I am going to have to try this one day and see for myself. Have you ever painted an upholstered piece?

Is it possible to paint a sofa, I must really go and learn from Heidi.

I have not painted a sofa but have seen some other bloggers paint upholstered pieces. I have always wondered how stiff painted fabric would feel. I think it depends on the texture of the fabric. I just painted a pair of outdoor chair fabric seat cushions and they turned out quite well. They feel like soft vinyl.
