Clever Ways To Decorate With Plates

Hi All,

Decorating with plates has been a favorite practice of homemakers for a long time. For those of us who have formal dining rooms, we love to dress up our holiday table with pretty plates and dishes. Sometimes we even leave the table set all the time so we can admire our plates on a daily basis.

We may also display them in a traditional china cupboard, hutch or glass front cabinet.

But did you know we can  do sooo much more with them? I love decorating with plates. Plates come in so many different sizes, shapes and patterns. I just adore transferware like this beautiful Blue and White American Frontier Dinner Plate.

Transferware adds an elegant touch to a room and it comes in many colors like green, blue, red, brown and black. The easiest way to decorate a room with plates is to simply hang them on a wall with plate hangers. I bought these beautiful transferware cake plates from a yard sale. They look great framing the bay window in my cottage style dining room.

Here’s a better view of the effect…

Whether they are vintage or brand new, plates can add style to your room at a minimal cost. What country kitchen would be complete without a few adorable Rooster Plates!

Hung on a wall or displayed on a shelf, rooster plates are a staple among many country kitchens.

Decorating with plates does not have to be confined to just dining rooms and kitchens. They can warm up any room. I painted this beautiful antique hospital bed for a client last year. I love how she displayed vintage rose inspired plates on a mirror above the head board.

Hanging plates on a wall is a cost effective way to fill up a blank space that needs a little something. In my master bathroom the space between the bottom of the window and the toilet tank was bare and barren. It bugged me. These small vintage plates filled the space wonderfully.

You can also incorporate plates into your decor with a few creative projects as well.

This Upcycled Cake Stand was created by adhering a new ceramic plate and a vintage milk glass compote with Epoxy.

This elegant Tidbit tray was created using the same technique. This time I used vintage china plates with glass candle holders.

I love decorating with plates. They have been slowly creeping into many rooms in my home. I already have a stash of them that will be finding  a new home when I complete my master bedroom makeover. You can find vintage plates at thrift stores, flea markets, yard sales and online at sites like Etsy.com, Ebay and mine (of course). They can usually be snatched up at budget friendly prices, making it affordable to start your own collection.

Well, blogland friends, thanks so much for visiting today. I hope you enjoyed it. Do you have any clever ideas on decorating with plates? I’d love to hear them!

Ta,

~Lisa

I love that last set of dishes on the red polka-dot tablecloth. Can you tell me the name of the pattern, please? (I’m visiting from The Shabby Creek Cottage.) Also, I love the aqua against the red. Beautiful!
