Creative Spring Gardening: DIY Faux Floral Hanging Baskets

posted in: Before and After, Cottage Gardening | 1

Hi All,

I am happy to say that Spring has Sprung (finally) in Eastern North Carolina. Things are starting to turn green, the birds are singing and I am happy to say I have started my Spring gardening. Last year I was so busy with the new shop space that I didn’t have time to do much with my yard. Today I want to share with you a little gardening project I just completed.

I love having a front porch and every year I buy a few gorgeous hanging baskets for it. Needless to say, my front porch gets full sun and in the heat of the summer my beautiful hanging floral baskets shrivel up and die despite watering. UGH.

This year I decided to do something a little different. I decided to “Go Faux.” I started looking around for ready made, indoor/ outdoor silk floral hanging baskets. I was disappointed to find only cheap, fake looking ones that were quite expensive at $30 a pop. I decided to make my own. I didn’t want to hang anything that was obviously plastic, fake flowers. I wanted to find some flowers, Geraniums specifically, that looked realistic. I love geraniums. They remind me of my Grandmother’s house when I was a kid and they are perfect for a country, cottage style garden. I found what I was looking for at a local craft store; beautiful, full bushes at $10 each. I waited a week until they went on sale and snagged four bushes at a mere $5 each. Yeah!

I had a bunch of plastic hanging flower pots sitting in my garage and chose to reuse them. I started by filling the bottom with some decorative rocks to add some weight to each pot. You could also use pea gravel found in the garden section at your local home improvement store as well.

Next, I wedged a piece of Styrofoam down into each pot…..

I fluffed up the flowers and stems, and hung each Faux Floral Hanging Basket on the porch.

I think they look pretty good and they are kill proof! I created these two faux floral hanging baskets for under $30. Not too bad!

I was so happy with how they turned out that I went back to my craft shop and purchased a pink geranium bush. I painted a clay pot aqua blue, added rocks, Styrofoam, the flowers and topped it off with the pea gravel. The gravel is decorative but also weighs the piece down so it doesn’t blow away!

And A Little Real Gardening Projects…

I have also been doing a little more gardening, pulling weeds and mulching garden beds. I stopped into my local Lowe’s Home Improvement Center to buy some mulch and spotted a couple of large potted Geraniums on clearance for $1 a piece. I figured at $1 I could afford the risk of my-not-so-green thumb.

Two of them are sitting by the front door…

And there is another potted Geranium sitting on an old painted chair I have sitting in the back garden.

Here is a comparison view of my “Real and Faux” Geraniums. What do you think?????

A few year’s ago I created an Upcycled Bird Bath out of an old spindle, a vintage enamelware bowl and an old plate.

After a few years of being out in the elements the bowl had developed a couple of holes in it so this year I turned it into a planter with a few pretty annuals.
