Simple Ways To Update An Outdated Bedroom On A Shoestring Budget

We all know the “latest” styles and trends come and go in the world of home decorating. What seemed posh and swanky a few years ago can look passé and tacky today. So what do we do if we have a room fill of outdated furniture and decor but are faced with a tight redecorating budget? Today I am going to show you how to update an outdated bedroom on a budget.

A Bedroom Stuck In The 80’s

How To Update a Dated Bedroom On A Budget

While contemporary, Formica Salmon pink furniture was way cool back in the days when Don Johnson was strutting around in his double breasted suit jacket and relaxed slacks on Miami Vice, today it just looks stale. Replacing an entire bedroom suite can be very expensive. To update the look of the furniture you can paint it with special paint for slick surfaces.

Outdated Bedroom Makeover

If painting is not your thing or you just don’t have the time, there are a few simple changes we can make to bring this bedroom into the 21st century. One of the quickest and easiest ways to get an outdated bedroom out of its time warp is to change out the bedding. Pick something fresh that will compliment what you already have going on in the room. In the case of this 80’s beach style bedroom I chose a quilt set that had a lot of pink in it to offset the furniture. I also added a pair of new lamps to the room.

Update The Artwork

Once I swapped out the lamps and bedding, the hunter green in the artwork just didn’t work in the room. Instead of spending money on new artwork for above the bed I decided to paint the border.

Beachy Bedspread

With a few simple changes the eye goes directly to the bed and artwork while the outdated furniture falls into the background.

Here is another example of how simply swapping out the bedding can really pack a punch in a dark bedroom full of dated furniture.

This master bedroom does not get enough natural sunlight and the dark furniture and bedding was not helping the matter. By adding a colorful bedding set and a few bright throw pillows this bedroom is much more cheerful.

You may also want to consider upcycling a few of the accessories in the room like painting your existing lamps and adding new shades. Painting your furniture can definitely bring the room up to date. Shop at thrift stores for picture frames and “new” artwork.
