I have spent the past few weeks dealing with the impact and aftermath of Hurricane Florence here on the coast of North Carolina. It has been a crazy few weeks. There was so much destruction in my beloved home town. We suffered damage to our home as well but we were some of the lucky ones. I will share more of that ordeal in a later post. Things for me are finally returning to normal at home and today I want to share a furniture makeover project I completed for my horse themed master bedroom. Today I am tickled to show you a thrift store foot locker trunk makeover that sports a French Equestrian (horse) theme. Two of my favorite things!
With a modestly sized home of 1550 square feet and no basement or attic to speak of, storage is always an issue. Especially when you work from home and are a bit of a clutter bug! There never seems to be enough room for all of my clothes in my master and I had been wanting something pretty to store the over flow. I had been searching for a used trunk that I could upcycle and then I found this one at a local thrift shop. I think I paid about $15 for it but can’t really remember. It sat in my garage for a while before I had time to give it a makeover.
Adding Height And A Decorative Touch To The Thrift Store Trunk
To start off this thrift store trunk makeover, I added some decorative feet to the bottom for a little height and added interest. Two short table legs hidden away in my stash of goodies and scrap wood were perfect for this.
Using my skill saw, I cut the table legs down to make 4 bun feet for the bottom of the trunk.
I attached the bun feet to the bottom of the foot locker with wood glue. Once dry, I flipped it over and reinforced the feet with screws from the inside of the trunk.
Paint It Out Baby!
Then I painted the entire trunk out in white paint and lightly distressed the edges and metal work with sandpaper.
Finishing Touches On The Thrift Store Trunk Makeover
Now comes the French, Equestrian twist! I designed a horse themed collage on my computer using a variety of images like riding boots, a riding helmet and gorgeous horse’s head on a French script background. The French words Amour de cheval, which means Horse Love, adorns the top. I added vintage roses to the bottom for a romantic touch. I printed the image out on large format paper and decoupaged it to the top of the trunk.
After a few coats of paste wax this upcycled thrift store trunk makeover was finished! It now sits in my bedroom, under a window and holds my overflow of shirts, pants and sweaters. No more messy laundry baskets! I love it!
