Simple Vintage Seed Packet Pillows

Hello My Blog Friends!

Today I would like to share with you a project I whipped up a couple of weeks ago. The pillows on my front porch swing were badly faded and needed an update. I searched the internet for an outdoor fabric that would hold up to the strong summer sun here in eastern NC but came up empty. There are tons of outdoor fabric out there that is quite lovely but nothing was grabbing me. Then I had an “Ah Ha” moment.

I had bought a painter’s drop cloth a while back with the intention of making pillows but had yet to find the time. I figured it would hold up well outside and maybe I could paint something on it. But what? Roses? Flowers? Hmmmm. That’s when I thought about vintage seed packets. I knew I had seen vintage seed packet images on the internet (an loved them). What would be a more perfect place than on a pillow on my porch?

So, I got to work. I pulled out the drop cloth and made a simple slip cover for the pillows. By folding it over the pillow and sewing the seams, leaving an opening to slip the pillow inside on the back, this was quite easy. I knew I had some iron on transfer paper stashed in my craft closet. I began searching the internet for vintage seed packet images and came up with quite a few pretty ones.

Here are the finished products……

One thing I found was  that the image was not fully transferring to the fabric giving it a faded look. I am not sure if the fabric was the cause or perhaps the paper was a bit old but I like how it turned out. They look like they’ve been around awhile.

Here are a few Vintage Seed Packet images you may use on your own projects if you like. I would love to see what you do with them!
