Decorating A Boring Living Room By Adding Personality

Decorating A Boring Living Room with Colorful Accessories and Giving It A New Lease On Life

Hello My Dear Blogland Friends,

Today I am going to share with you a little staging project I completed for a client a couple of months ago. I am going to show you how decorating a boring living room with colorful accents and artwork can bring a room to life.

When I first walked into this living room it was functional but a little off balance and dull. The walls were blank and uninspiring.

A Boring Living Room

It was a large room, freshly painted and it had potential. It just needed a bit warming up.

The fireplace also needed a little pizzazz.

Warm Things Up With Some Greenery

I started by adding some artwork to the mantel to liven things up a bit. I also added two large floral arrangements to the base of the fireplace. They really warm up the look of the fireplace by offsetting the coolness of the tile. Floral arrangements, whether real or fake can add softness and warmth to the hard edges of a room.

Decorating a Fireplace

I love creating custom floral arrangements. I bought most of the florals from Hobby Lobby. They have such a great selection. The containers were a lucky find from Walmart. Some designers scoff at faux flowers because they are dust collectors. True, they can be, but with occasional cleaning they can last a really long time, unlike the “real” variety. If the silk flowers are not too delicate you can even hose them off in the sink to knock off the dust. I’ve done it!

Create a Focal Point

Creating a focal point, I hung a large print above the desk on the far wall and added a lamp and a few pretty accessories. The love seat was over to the right a bit too much, making the room feel off balance. I scooted it to the left about a foot or two and placed the end table back beside it. I added a large green birdcage to the table and placed a few custom pillows and a soft cuddly throw to the love seat.

This is the view you see when you first walk directly into the room. I think it looks much better than staring at a blank wall.

I placed another print above the sofa on the large wall and added another throw and a few more pillows.

Decorating Tip:

Have an outdated sofa and love seat? You can opt to buy new ones but if that is not in your budget, simple slipcovers can give them a whole new look. If your budget is even tighter than that, try adding some new pillows! Create new pillows from updated, trendy fabrics and it will take your eye away from the dated aspect of the furniture.

Adding Personality To A Room

Decorating a boring living room does not have to be a daunting task. With a few creatively placed art pieces and colorful accessories any room can go from boring to beautiful! After all, good accessories are the jewelry of a room. That’s what gives it personality. This living room was once cold and a bit uninviting. Now it says, “Welcome. Sit and stay awhile!”
