Before and After: A Roadside Find Shabby to Chic Table Makeover

A Before and After Story: A Roadside Table Gets a New Look With a Little Paint and Creativity.

Hi All,

If you are a proud junk addict, upcycler, shabby chic enthusiast you may appreciate my post today. I am always on the lookout for a great find at a great price and what is a better price than FREE? I have been known to hit the brakes now and again when I see a gem sitting on the side of the road, crying out to be saved. Over the years I have pulled everything from old screen doors, old windows and pieces of furniture into the back of my car. To my daughter’s horror last year I snagged an old wicker rocking chair out of a dumpster at the local dump. She almost died.

My family does not share in my junkin’ enthusiasm but they have learned to live with my antics. A couple of summers ago we were visiting family in New York when I spotted a cute little table out on the curb waiting for the trash man. As we were driving up to it I exclaimed, “Oh that table could be sooo cute!” Without saying anything, my husband pulled the car over, got out, picked up the table and threw it the back of the car. He may have rolled his eyes once or twice, I am not sure, but awwww what a guy!

The small side table was in good shape, a nice solid piece with great lines. It just needed a little TLC. So, we brought it all the way home to NC and this sweet little side table sat in my garage patiently waiting for a makeover. Last Spring it got it’s chance to be beautiful again.

I started by adhering a piece of textured wall paper to the faux leather panel on the top of the table. I then painted the entire piece a soft light blue.

When the paint was dry and the paint cured, I gave the entire table a white wash, wiping off the excess to highlight the nooks and crannies. This technique really brought out the design in the textured wall paper.

The hardware got a new look with a coat of white paint and a little distressing.Shabby Chic Table Makeover

For a bit of the unexpected I decoupaged some old book pages and a post card image to the interior of the drawer.

Overall, I think this shabby chic inspired side table turned out very sweet, perfect for a room in need of a romantic touch.

Thanks so much for visiting today. I am happy to see February here. It means that March and Spring are on their way. I have really grown tired of being cooped up indoors and am yearning for warmer weather, green grass and sunny days. I have been itching to get into my garage/studio and start painting again!
