A Trip to The Salvage Yard and a Shabby Birdbath

posted in: Cottage Decorating | 27
A few years back I stumbled upon a wonderful salvage yard full of the neatest junk. When I first convinced my husband to turn into the place he looked around and then looked at me like I was nuts. All he could see was a bunch of JUNK. For those who do not relish the idea of getting dirty while rummaging through piles of old windows, table legs, doors and such don’t see what we junkers do. We see what something COULD be. We delight in  the possibility of turning an old piece of fence into a great headboard, an old door into a table, shutters into shelves, etc.  Doug’s Salvage is located along Highway 17 in the small town of Hollyridge NC. About a 45 minute drive for me. I have been dying to make a trip back there for sometime and last weekend I finally made it.

After trudging through the place for about an hour I ended up purchasing a few lovely old, chippy pieces of molding, casings, two table legs and an old section of fencing for my garden.
Total Spent…A Whopping $10!

An Upcycled Bird Bath!

I turned one of the old legs into a bird bath. The “bath” part is an old Enamel bowl and the base is a thrift store plate turned upside down. I put some river rocks in the bottom of the basin and filled it with water. (You can also see the fencing I bought  in the background.)

I adhered all three pieces using my favorite adhesive. It is called Amazing Goop and it is truly amazing. It is my “Go To” glue for many projects. I know a lot of people are on team E-6000 but I prefer this hands down. In my opinion this holds up much better.

Thanks so much for stopping by today.

Hi, Lisa! You and I are both featured at Stephanie Lynn's Under the Table and Dreaming, and I thought I'd come over and say hello. My little mirrored garden streamers are two below you, and I bet they'd go great with your wonderful birdbath (you wouldn't consider coming to Cape Cod and making one for me, would you?) Love your "Creative Home," and will be sure to drop by again soon!

I love Dougs salvage too! There are so many goodies there! I found it on the way to visit my sister! I didnt rummage long because of time. I remember thinking his prices were a little high for "junk" though. Do you know if you can talk him down on prices? Wonder if he'd take whatever I had in my pocket… 🙂

The bird bath made with the table leg. I was wondering is it sturdy and is it top heavy when filled. I. Am very interested in building one .and where can i uasually find the salvage yards ?

    • Lisa Hogan

      Hi David,
As long as the base dinner plate is a good size you should not have any problem with the bird bath becoming top heavy. I didn’t. You could look for local salvage yards online or try scouring thrift shops and Habitat for Humanity Resale shops. You may get lucky there. 🙂
