Hi Everyone,
Today I would like to share with a you a sweet surprise we had in our garden a few weeks ago. We have two hanging baskets on our front porch and one night I took them down to give them a good watering. Can you guess what I found nestled inside one of them?
I tiny little nest with teenee tiny eggs! I carefully rehung the basket and watched. In no time at all we saw Mamma and Daddy swoop in tending to their babies ~to~ be.
A friend gave me a book on birds and I discovered that the pair were called House Finches.
The Mamma is all gray and the Daddy is more flamboyant with a red head and chest. What amazed me is that these two were always together, doting on their nest. How sweet!
Every couple of days I would check on them and about two weeks later we had babies! This is the first of the bunch.
Pretty soon we had a nest full of three bundles of fluff! Everyday I would check on them and pretty soon tiny little feathers emerged.
Its amazing how quickly they changed.
I took this shot just before this little guy took his first flight.
After about two weeks all the babies had flown away and we had an empty nest.
I think they still hang around though. The other day my daughter and I saw a bird at our feeder. He looked very young and was just starting to turn red on his head and chest. It was a nice sight to see, a visit from our summer surprise!
Hope you enjoyed watching our babies grow from an egg to an independent feathered friend!
Have a great day!
~Lisa
