Creative Ideas For Decorating With Baskets

posted in: Cottage Decorating | 4

Take a look in your closets, attic or storage room and you are bound to find a couple of unused baskets lying around. I use baskets in my every day decorating and love them. There are plenty of creative ideas for decorating with baskets, whether you are sprucing up your home or a charming little gift shop. You can easily implement these ideas in your own design scheme.

Decorating With Picnic Baskets

Old picnic baskets are great. I found this one a couple of years ago at a local yard sale. I brought it home and gave it a white distressed look with a little paint.

Today it is sitting in my living room holding an assortment of old cassette tapes and CD’s. (Hmm. I may be one of the last people on Earth who still listens to cassette tapes!) Vintage picnic baskets are great because they are generally large and can hold a lot of goodies.

Try using them to creatively display a collection of tablecloths and table linens.

Here is another vintage picnic basket I have in my home.

We actually use this picnic basket when we go on picnics at the beach or the park but it can also be used as a backdrop in a cute display. Fill it with a vintage cook book, some pretty dishes, hang a festive tablecloth over the edge and you have an attractive kitchen display!

A Pretty Wedding Display

Baskets can be great props for weddings. If you are looking for a creative way to dress up a wedding inspired display for your shop or for decorating for your own wedding consider incorporating baskets into your design scheme. Start out with a simple round table, a pretty tablecloth and a couple of baskets.Creative Ways To Use Baskets In Displays

Fill a large basket with silk flowers for a pretty centerpiece and use a flat serving basket to display favors or candles. You may then add your wedding merchandise or perhaps use it as a gift table for your reception. You can easily paint the baskets to match your decor.

Creative Upcycling With Baskets

You can also do a little creative upcycling with old baskets. This thrift store basket could be used as a planter or trash can but I have an even better idea for baskets like this one.

Since this basket has no handles you can easily flip it upside down, glue a plastic charger plate to it and spray paint any color you like. Viola! You now have a cute pedestal to incorporate into a display or vignette that adds height and style.

Sometimes all you have to do is “think outside the box” a little bit so to speak. By simply turning this lined basket on it’s side it is transformed into a display piece with a shadow box effect. A place to display candles, books or anything your imagination takes you. You could even hang it on a wall.

I hope these creative ideas for decorating with baskets inspires you to pull out those dusty baskets in the attic and put them too good use in your shop or home!

Happy Decorating!

Hi Lisa. I love all the ideas for your baskets. Those old picnic baskets are so great. I have one sitting in a corner in the kitchen with a few odd Christmas decorations inside. Guess I should put it to a better use..Happy Wednesday..Judy

      Hi Judy,
I snatch up old picnic baskets whenever I see them at a fair price. They are so great for storage and look great too!
